5 Whimsical New York Stays That Feel Straight Out of a Fairytale

From the flashing lights on Broadway to the tall skyscrapers, New York City is known for its magic, especially to the millions of people who visit each year. However, if you’re an NYC native, like me, the realities of living in the big apple can be less than a fairytale. When I need a mental and physical escape from the hustle and bustle, I love going upstate for a short getaway. From hand-built castles to cinderella themed suites, here are 5 of the most enchanting escapes in New York State that will transport you straight into a fairytale.

***Pro Tip: If you work from home, or don’t work weekdays try going to these getaways Sunday-Wednesday to avoid higher weekend pricing.

  • The Roxbury Motel

The Roxbury Motel had to be first on the list as it’s the ultimate whimsical getaway.  The Roxbury has two properties which consist of themed rooms and suites at The Roxbury Motel and the themed mansion rooms and tower cottages at The Roxbury at Stratton Falls. Their rooms range from $100-$675 per night, but a stay at any room will give you access to their spa, pool, and stunning waterfall just a short walk from the property. I got a taste of the motel at their Flintstones-themed room (way more affordable), but if you’re balling on a budget try their famous Cinderalla or Dracula-themed towers which have national news coverage.

  • Wing’s Castle

An extraordinary bed & breakfast in Millbrook, NY, Wings Castle was created by artists Toni Ann Wing and her late husband, Peter Wing. Peter Wing turned his sketches to life hand-building this incredible stay over a 45-year period using 80% recycled materials. I stayed in their 2-floor annex suite which had several small details and antiques, transporting me to a different time. The stay features a moat pool that goes under the castle and leads to the other side, free breakfast, and a tour of the historic grounds with Toni Ann Wing. Definitely one of my favorite stays in all of New York!

  • Mohonk Mountain House

On the pricier side, Mohonk Mountain House is an iconic stay in New York. This Victorian castle resort is located in the Hudson Valley, only 90 miles from New York City. Go hike on their private property during the fall to see the gorgeous autumn leaves, or during the summer to go kayaking or lake jumping. This award-winning destination also features a spa, ice-skating rink, and farm-to-table dining. I highly recommend this stay for big groups as there is so much to do in this resort.

The only Airbnb on the list, the Hobbit House of Pawling is located 1.5 hours from New York City. The stay is an incredible option for Lord of The Rings lovers and anyone who wants a getaway. The interior is full of cool touches and has three beds fitting up to six people. The side of the house features a private hot tub where robes and towels are provided making it a cozy option for cooler months in addition to beautiful in the summer. Ring quests are provided upon request (so fun and challenging)!
