Caves are probably the LAST thing people think about when visiting, or exploring, New York State. However, we New Yorkers know that the wonders of this beautiful state never end. Here are some of the coolest geological, underground treasures in Upstate, NY.

  1. Secret Caverns

Located in Howes Cave, NY, Secret Caverns is a great find for all ages. For $18 per person ($10 for children) you can take their escalator down 103 steps to caverns that have been explored since its discovery in 1928. The 1-hour tour ends with viewing their 100ft underground waterfall, which will definitely leave you fascinated! They allow photography so get your cameras and phones ready at this magical place!

2. Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride

Embark on a 75-minute tour in this awesome cave or go on an underground boat ride in this awesome find in Lockport, NY. You’ll learn the fascinating history of industrial expansion in New York and its connection to the Erie Canal. They have several tour options available so check the website for more! Tickets are $23.95 for adults and $15.95 for young adults.

3. Howe Caverns

These Caverns are a New York favorite and the 2nd most visited tourist attraction in Upstate, NY (following Niagara Falls). Purchase your ticket ahead of time online and take the elevator over 150ft down to an underground wonder. Tour the caverns as you learn about their initial discovery and finish off with an underground boat ride. At the end of the tour visit their gift shop to purchase some decorative rocks or their signature cave-aged cheddar cheese (we tried it, it’s good). Tickets are $25 for Adults, $22 for Seniors, and $15.00 for children.

4. Natural Stone Bridge and Caves

So this find doesn’t necessarily feature caverns like the others, however, it’s a popular tourist attraction featuring grottos, lighted caves, waterfalls and more! According to their website; the massive Stone Bridge is the LARGEST marble cave entrance in the eastern U.S. and is still being carved by the beautiful Trout Brook.” The 1-hour self-guided tour is $16.95 for adults and $8.95 for children.
